Comment: I first saw the Spurrlows at YFC rally in about 1968. Again in 1969 and After the Rally, I auditioned for the group and was invited to rehearsal camp.
I was concerned that I might be drafted as my number was 70, so I joined the 59th Army Band, California National Guard. I just retired. I went on to get my degree from Northwest Nazarene University and have since taught music and lead numerous groups. I have always wondered if I would have gotten drafted if I had gone to the camp that next year instead of to Army basic training. Would I have made the Spurrlows. One always wonders.

I have used "Have You met Jesus" and "First Place" dozens if not hundreds of times over the last nearly forty years.

Thanks for you great music

Steve Buerer

Comment: Hey gang,

I'm a former Festival of Praise Spurrlow member and wanted to let you know, if you, like I, were part of FOP or the FOP Spurrlows and have wanted to connect with other former FOP / Spurrlows, we have a site on Facebook where you can share your FOP memories and photos with others. Thurlow did something that was not only history-making, but life-changing in bringing his vision for Festival of Praise to life! Come check out the FOP / Spurrlows Alumni group on Facebook and share the memories with others.

Thurlow, hope you don't mind me posting this here. I'm sure there are many who appreciate what you have done in our lives and establishing the group on Facebook has proven to be a neat way for us to make new friends and reconnect with old ones. If there's some other way to get the word out, it would be wonderful if you could help us do that. Come on out and join us if you would like. There will always be a place there for you!

Comment: Hi Thurlow,
Just found your web page. Great. You are looking good and still sounding wonderful. We still have fond memories of our time with you at Salem Baptist in Winston-Salem and the beginnings of the Spurlows. Would love to hear one of your concerts. Let us know if you are ever in the Oklahoma area.
Love and best wishes, D. A. and Carol

Comment: I`ll never forget my first Spurrlow concert experience. It fueled my interest in what my occupation is today-a stagehand/followspot operator/pyrotechnican. It was in 1966 at the former Moline Gospel Temple in Moline, IL. It was the climaxing night of the churches youth outreach crusade, the Harvest Festival. They selected a queen and a junior attendant, which my older sister was. The auditorium was filled-over 1,000 people! The place was buzzing with excitement. Finally, the house lights went off, the curtain went up, the music started and the spotlights came on. The Spurrlows concert began! When the queen was selected, she did the traditional walk across the platform and Thurlow sang to her-like Bert Parks, only better! As a 6 year old then, all the production and pageantry of the Spurrlows experience forever sparked my interest in concert production. God bless you.

Comment: Thurlow, thanks for your contibution to making me the musician I have become. You showed me how to find the courage not only to "make every note count" but to believe I could do just about anything I put my mind to doing. Thanks for letting me wash your Mercedes that day too! I drove it all over the neighborhood waving and smiling at everyone before I brought it back! :-)
I draw on things I learned from you when I coach other choirs and soloists myself...even after 20+ years!

Comment: When I first went to Calvary Assembly in the mid-1970's, Thurlow was the music director, that night he led the congregational song. "I Am Happy in the Service of the King". I will never forget that night! I gave my life to Jesus Christ and was transformed! Thurlow's inspiring personality is a blessing - Thurlow understands the power of music to change a mood, transform a rooom full of people and bring great joy to hearts!
